Photos and the media endpoint

Posts are sent as JSON, and JSON cannot carry files, so photos always go to your media endpoint first: a multipart/form-data POST with one part named file and your access token. The endpoint answers 201 with a Location header for the file, and that URL goes into the post's photo property (with alt text as {"value": "…", "alt": "…"}).

Quill advertises the media endpoint it found from q=config on the Settings page. Without one, photos can still be added by pasting an image URL.

Before uploading, JPEGs are rotated according to their EXIF orientation. Files up to 30 MB are accepted. If your media endpoint reports the photo's date and location in its JSON response (date_created, latitude, longitude), the note's published date and location are filled in from them.
